OVERVIEW OF AUTOMOTIVE BRAKES
When it comes to your brake system, a lot happens behind the scenes when you press down on the brake pedal. Depending on your vehicle, your brake system is either a disc or drum. Each is based on a hydraulic pressure system, but they differ in slowing down and stopping the wheel. When you engage the brakes in a disc system, the brake fluid clashes against the pistons inside the caliper, which then forces the brake pads against the rotor. This friction against both sides of the disc is what stops the wheel’s rotation. Meanwhile, when you engage the brakes in a drum system, the wheel cylinder and pistons push the brake shoe against the interior of the spinning drum. This contact then slows and stops the brake drum and wheel rotation. Here at U.S. Automotive in Springfield, Missouri, we have experience in caring for both brake systems, along with the anti-lock braking system (ABS), and are proud to offer a range of brake repair and maintenance services to assist with your automotive brake needs!
